Story #40Rockpick Legend Co.Salt Lake City, UT

They say if you like what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life, and I’ve never worked, not in the last 18 years.

If you know something is right, you don’t question it.

When the rock shop that Rick Dalrymple grew up frequenting was in danger of closing, he immediately handed over his credit card and took over the business from the original founder, affectionately referred to as “Old Man Lewis,” who had long encouraged Rick’s childhood fascination with rock and mineral collecting. “We just didn’t think twice about it,” he says.  “We’ve never looked back.”

Today, Rockpick Legend Co. is Salt Lake City’s one stop shop for all things rock and mineral related. In addition to purchasing rocks, minerals, lapidary equipment, and tools like rock tumblers (used to smooth and polish stones), customers can browse geology-related books and jewelry made by local artisans. Furthermore, just as Old Man Lewis fostered Dalrymple’s passion, he hopes to do the same for others by making Rockpick Legend Co. a place where students, scout groups, Utah residents and visitors can come simply to learn about rocks and minerals. Rockpick’s “museum room” is home to more than 500 rocks, fossils, and gems, all of which are local to Utah.

It’s common to see wide-eyed, youthful faces around the shop – as Dalrymple’s nine children grew up, they would do their homework there and help out with small tasks.  Some of them still work there today, and Dalrymple is quick to acknowledge their importance in keeping his dream alive.  Even when the recession hit and the business saw sales plummet, they never gave up – when you’re as passionate about something as he is, giving up just isn’t an option.

It’s also never too late to explore new opportunities.  In addition to his work at the shop, Dalrymple is developing his skills as a silversmith while working toward a degree in gemology. He dreams of opening a museum to further showcase the amazing natural elements Utah has to offer.

Though he doesn’t see himself ever retiring, the hope is that one day one of the many people he has touched through his work at Rockpick Legend Co. will take the reins, much like he did years ago.
