Story #50Grace Tree ServiceHayden, ID

We’re not going to look back on how much money we made, but the lives we affected.

How many people can say that they discovered their dream job on the side of the road? Over 30 years ago, Tim Kastning was driving when he spotted a worker high up in a tree. He pulled over and watched for a while, before introducing himself and getting a quick lesson in how to tie knots. After a lot of practice and some gear purchases, Kastning put a sign on his truck and the first seeds of Grace Tree Service were planted. Since 1998, this small business has been handling tree removal, pruning, pest management, stump grinding, arboricultural consultations, and even litigation around tree damages and property disputes. “Anything that has the word tree in the sentence, we do it,” says Kastning.

The tree care industry wasn’t entirely new to Kastning, who had his own lawn care company in college. He was brought up being told that if he wanted something, he had to work for it, a mentality that has stayed with him throughout his years as a small business owner and is evidenced by the numerous credentials he has obtained in his field. “I started out in this business having never worked for anyone and we’ve risen to a point where we are leaders in our industry. We are the only accredited tree care company in Idaho for ten years standing now.”

While hard work is certainly a key factor in Kastning’s success, having a strong ethical backbone is also important, and the reason for the word Grace in the company name. “From that name I believe comes a great responsibility of providing a fair, honest, ethical service,” says Kastning.

Kastning’s line of work is one of the most dangerous in the world, particularly when it comes to being up a tree or removing massive pieces of trunk. Now 55, he doesn’t climb as often, and hopes to find ways to simplify in the future, both personally and professionally. With Grace Tree Service, that means concentrating on their core services and making things more efficient. It’s not about being the biggest, it’s about doing things right.

“It’s not so much about growth, it’s making sure that we serve our clients properly.”
